Feral Pigs Are Causing Problems On A Continental Scale

The following list of links provides an overview of feral pigs and the problems they cause. This compilation differs from a list of scientific publications in that it uses many local newspapers and similar sources. These sources give a sense of what it is like to live with pigs and the damage they cause, which is something that scientific and hunting publications often don't provide.

There are a lot of links here, and they tend to come and go. If you find a dead link, I would be grateful if you'd send me an email:  brian@brianknudsen.ca. I'd also love to hear about links that you think should be added. Thanks a lot. Hope you find this useful.

Recent Developments

  • Alberta: Wild Boars Creating Havoc In Alberta (07-May-2008)
Alberta has declared wild boars (feral pigs) to be pests in new legislation. Three counties (Lac Ste. Anne, Vermillion River and Cardston) have complained about particularly large wild boar populations. Feral pigs can now be killed, whereas formerly they could only be recaptured.
  • Alberta: Alberta Orders Landowners To Help Eradicate Wild Boars (08-Jul-2008)
It is interesting to note that Alberta has placed wild boars in the same category as Norway rats. Landowners are actually required to report wild boars on their property and then eradicate them. If the landowners take no action, the municipality can do the job and send the landowner the bill.
  • North Dakota: State Veterinarian Can Dispose of Wild Pigs (29-Mar-2008)
North Dakota is implementing an intensive cooperative eradication program. Pigs appear to have been eliminated last summer from an area in the western part of the state. During the past winter efforts have been being conducted along the Canadian border at the Turtle Mountains.
